Jaydee Supernatural Fretless 1987/2023
Переглядів 6348 місяців тому
Another special creation from the Jaydee family! A couple of things to note, the maple fingerboard is finished with the standard urethane type poly finish...I am using roundwounds and it is NOT epoxied! It was delivered with rotosound Swingmasters 35-95 so a little change from my usual strings but wanted to give them a whirl before I swap to Kaliums...
1964 Rickenbacker RM 1999
Переглядів 1,9 тис.9 місяців тому
This is the REAL THING! Chris Squire et al had these basses early on. This is a perpetual player, never babied and still sounds and plays great! A lot of mods have been done over the years but it still stands strong and will shred for years to come! Full explanation in the video!

1 of the 200 Blackstars done by Ric. Mono out, no binding, white pin dot fret markers. A fun bass that are reasonably hard to come by(I have had 5 of these)....Questions? comment below and I will do my best to explain this bass further! If you want to hear just the playing, jump ahead 2 mins and take it from there!

Jaydee Supernatural Roadie 1 Customized
Переглядів 2,3 тис.2 роки тому
Lots to explain here! This is a 1981 Jaydee Supernatural Roadie 1 that was customized by Jaydee for me. All of the original hardware (except tuners) was replated from brass to chrome. Frets and nut are all brand new. Trussrod cover is painted to match the Pink. Paint was done by TDog customs, a one of a kind! Most of the sounds you hear were the bass alone brought up to line level. Additional g...
Yamaha Attitude Plus

A nice Attitude Plus from Yamaha, created for the original owner's specs. Only slightly changed as the preamp had issues and has been removed. Even came with the official Yamaha gig bag! I am going to try to find a cool fretless to do along the way here.... Thanks to: @TheGHSStrings @Tech21nyc @ampegtv @YamahaGuitarsOfficial

You wish you had a Jazz. LOL Pickup location is everything Musicman in front and the J in the back sounds pretty good on that bass..Other than that, I bet if you showed up in a recording session they might ask up to play the P bass that is hanging on the wall in the control room.
Beautiful bass, as you say the action needs to be adjusted. Myself, I am an owner of a Jaydee Calibas, ordered from Mr John Diggins back in -89. Best bass I ever had, so versatile. Had to change the electronics though, but that´s normal I guess.
Calibas is not very common. Which electronics did you put back in the bass?
@@bassjaymi Yes I know, I have a rare bass. Well, my choice of electronics went to Aguilar, their OBP-3 onboard preamp. It works well together with the Kent Armstrong humbuckers.
It’s the Varitone invented in 1952 by Bill Lawrence.
Incredible bass, incredibly modern (it was the 80's!!) The sound quality in the video doesn't do it quite justice. Never got around to playing one, but I sure would like to, and see for myself. The one oddity in terms of design is the location of the neck pickup, which makes it pretty unconvenient for plucking, which is odd considering that this bass is a slap machine.
Believe it or not, the pickup there is not hard to slap on/around....same thing has been said for the Rickenbacker but I have slapped them for years lol...Definitely try one when you can! They are brilliant basses!
Finally got the DP-12 by Schecter and soon after got their Riot 8-string... I wish I hadn't waited so long to get a multi-course bass, they have a full sound and great for chords. Would have helped if any guitar store would carry them so bassists can try them out, they're great for metal and prog. Just watch out for the neck dive 😓
Vintage Ibanez is awesome! Modern Ibanez is great, but a made in Japan, premium spec (Gotoh, Leo Quan/Badass or MiJ Ibanez hardware, DiMarzio-pickups, prettier wood, etc.) Vintage series is way overdue
They were in their own class....that is for sure!
I owned one beautiful bass. Sold it to a guy. If your bass came in a flight case, that's my old bass.
@@Fuxerz no flight case with any of them sorry.
@bassjaymi Yeah, the guy was in Memphis, if I remember. The blackstar had a flight case, not a stock case. It's always fun looking for an ole guitar you sold, and I hope she made out OK. Thanks, rock on 🤘
Fantastic vid man, very insightful, want a Grabber so bad! Anyway, you just earnt another subscriber 🤘
Is there anyway to tell between a 73-81 4001?
Yes, there are LOTS of differences....pickup spacing, truss rod cover, etc...
What the strings are here on this video ? Thickness and tuning ?
Long story short, I was the second owner of this bass and I was forced to sell. If anyone can lead me to even an opportunity to discuss its return, l would be forever grateful. @grannisguitars
Own and play a Candy Apple Red since bought new late 1982. Awesome instrument able to cover any style imaginable. Prefer passive settings. Not so heavy as many suggest. Just a reliable fantastic instrument
Are these hard to play? Always wondered. Great video!
Thanks for the kind words! Like any other multistring bass, it is ALL in the setup....spacing is a little tight for me on fingerstyle but it eats the picks!
Sweet... sounds vaguely like my old Gibby Victory bass, nice thick growly tone. \m/
Do you still have the red monster???
@@bassjaymi Sadly, I do not... I traded that thing in for a fretless way back in '86, just after leaving Carmel. Loved the sound of that bass, but it was an odd-shaped boat-anchor... sweet tone but zero comfort.
Sounds awesome brother... love the classic Rick tone. ✌😎
There's another one coming....
My white whale. Have always wanted a musician Ibanez
FLCL moment
A LIL PINKPOON MAN
When are you playing next?
Gibson are so dumb to not make propper reissues of these basses... They can cash in so much on these.
They are not thinking like that....regardless of who is in charge....tis sad....
Thanks, I thought v63 was the replica of the RM1999? what are the differences? neck dimensions? pickups? can you tell me more please thank you
It is a replica in visual only. The neck on the v63 is thicker, the pickups are the modern pickups housed in vintage looking cases....They are NOT close...promise!
Hi, I trust you, but i can’t afford a RM1999 or a 70’s 4001. In 2004 I sold a 1975 4001 with the 1/2 ‘’ neck pickup spacing ( the best one I ever played) owned 5 after that but none have that sound I’m planning to buy a new one 4003s and put a toaster and horseshoe
@@alainaubut1099 sounds like a good plan
Sweet axe. Congratulations.
Hi, is a 4001v63 sound the same as the RM1999 Thanks
No, actually not even close. They are two different instruments, quite different...from Pickups to construction, lots of variables 😁😁😁
Thanks, I thought v63 was the replica of the RM1999? what are the differences? neck dimensions? pickups? can you tell me more please thank you
Love the tone Gene got out of these on She solo Midnight Special show wanted one ever since.
Grabber and Ampeg SVTs is THAT sound!
love the original Super 4 PUs - have them on MC980+RS920 and Super T4 on ST824
Ric’s sound to mechanical.
I think that is why people like them...and you can do some cool sounds with mechanical
best sounding rick ever
Well done J
Cheers Geo!
Looks fantastic! I spoke to Michael last week (Feb '24). My long awaited Series 1 with inlays is with Toby for spraying. Hopefully the bass will be with me in the near future (it was ordered on Aug 1st 2021).
Excellent!
Stunning bass - you'r right - they don't come that cheap. Amazing treble, but what is a Doug (?) pedal? That boosts the treble to sound just like Chris Squire? Thanks.
The dUg pedal is by Tech21NYC. It is the signature pedal of dUg Pinnick from King's X....has a LOT of tones in it!
@@bassjaymi Thank you! Will look it up but as I live in Australia it's probably not going to be cheap... I assume as the tone controls have been bypassed, the tone is basically flat?
It's $559 at Manny's...
@@ianr02 ouch
I LIKE THE LOOK OF THIS BASS LOOKS UNIQUE CAN YOU PLAY BLACK MAGIC
What about the intonation on a 78 4001? The adjustment arrangement seems kinda goofy to me.
some of them don't line up the way they should and we make the adjustments...
Amazing channel, amazing basses!!
I really wish Gibson still made those. Way better than any bass they have made in years.
Love your channel mate, keep on keeping on. Cheers from London. U.k.
Cheers me good mate!
I had a chance to buy this for $700. I blew it.
There aren't many around....gotta take those chances when they come up
No shit! But that was years ago and I was stupid. @@bassjaymi
@@zatoichi4449 Understand...I have passed on a few and regretted....
it's a shame@@bassjaymi
that sounds incredible
Thanks! It's going to be for sale soon!
Hello mucka found you hope your ok bud👍👍🎸🎸👍👍❤❤
Cheers mate....All good here...
Anyone recommend me a good dealer for Ric’s? I’m on the hunt for a Ric that has this type of bite and an honest dealer that can help me find the right one in the ballpark of this bite.
TO be honest, a lot of them don't have this kind of bite...
John Diggins has died... You can do a tribute video showing of all of your Jaydee basses in details.
I have two at this point. I have videos of them both on here
Great video (and beard) as always man! Love the sound of this bass but if I could make one suggestion I’d say back the treble and high kids off the pedal a bit. Sounds a bit harsh around 2-3kHz
Noted! Thanks for the kind words!
@@bassjaymi No worries! Side note: the tones you got with that Grabber in your latest video were absolutely mind blowing!
@@User-jk8wq That one may be for sale or trade VERY soon! Again, you are most kind!
Are 1968's stereo? BTW I bought your book....cool.
Not to my knowledge, they are mono....thanks and hope you enjoy it!
This was my first bass, $99 in 1985. Didn't realize it needed a 9V battery at first. The weight of it kinda screwed up my neck, I've been sensitive to pinched nerves ever since. My next bass was this thing's polar opposite weight wise, a Fender MusicMaster. The Ibanez sounded so great, the twang of the notes in octaves.
it is NOT a lightweight that is for sure! Glad you found something that worked for you!
that shit is gnarly
You read everywhere that Squire’s Rick was a 4001. It wasn’t. Look at THIS bass and you’ll know: Squire’s Rick was an RM1999!
That is a fact....RM 1999
At last someone that plays a Ric well
Thank you for the kind words!
It's a work of art.
Ooooo baby! I LOVE old Ibanez stuff! I have come very close to buying the 4 string version, as well as a RB860
For 8 string players I always think of Eddie Jackson of Queensryche, and whenever I ick up an 8 I start off with Jeremy by Pearl Jam 🤣
Sounds great man.
Time to get your Man-O-War on! LOL
